    Nolan | Utah Newborn Photographer

    Aug 12, 2014

I got to photograph Nolan's big sis a couple years ago for her newborn session.  I love when I get to see past clients all grown up and getting to meet their newest sibling!

I can tell you that Nolan is surrounded by so much love!  He has the greatest mommy, big sister, and grandma any little boy could ask for (and I'm sure MANY more family members)!

Without further ado, meet the handsome little guy that occupied this belly for 9 months  :)

    Ingrid | Utah Newborn Photographer

    Jul 21, 2014

Ingrid came to see me as a referral from one of my photographer friends!  Ingrid's mom is Laura Farris Photography's cousin and I'm so glad I was able to photograph her!

I absolutely love the name Ingrid and I think it totally suits this little girl (Ingrid is derived from an old Norwegian name Ingríðr meaning 'beautiful')!

I got some smiles, some yawns, and some bodily fluids in my lap and every single second was awesome!  Thank you so much Tasha for bringing your newest addition to come see me!

    Mia | Utah Newborn Photographer

    Jul 10, 2014

    Mia, Mia, Mia

I just loved sweet little Mia!  Her mom and dad were first time parents and drove from Park City to my in-home studio in Layton. That is such a feat for new parents and I commend them!  And I think the drive was quite worth it  ;)

Mia was WIDE awake when she arrived for her session, but she was also content so we went ahead with our first setup.  She amazed me with how well she was able to hold her head up and how aware she was of her surroundings!  She would stare out my big window and then she'd turn her head towards me at the sound of the camera shutter!  It was pretty awesome :)  She also has the sweetest little features!

Ok, enough talk, let's look at some gorgeous pictures!

    FAQ | Utah Newborn Photographer

    Jun 16, 2014

As a newborn photographer in Utah, I get asked a lot of questions anywhere from what equipment I use to where I get my props!  I've decided to put together a little frequently asked questions blog post to hopefully answer some of those questions.

    1.  What equipment do you use?

I shoot with a Nikon D700 and my nifty fifty (50 1.4).  That's all I have in my camera bag right now, but I definitely have a loooooong list of things I want!

    2.  Why is newborn photography expensive?

I believe that custom newborn photography is a luxury.  Not everyone can afford a custom newborn photographer, but if it's something you value, there's always affordable options.  I know that it is an investment (as is buying a car) so I offer my clients affordable payment plans.

    3.  Who is your favorite vendor?

That's such a hard one!  I work with so many vendors for my newborn portraits as well as have so many talented friends!  A few of my favorites include Petunia & Ivy, MyNewLove, Mes Belles Fleurs, and Adorable You.  I also have my own little shop called Silly Gus Designs.  Sometimes I make my own stuff  ;)

    4.  How did you get started in Newborn Photography?
It's really hard to say what actually got me started.  I bought my first DSLR when my daughter was just over a year and I photographed everyone from seniors to families....I even shot a wedding once!  As much as I loved each and every one of those sessions, I felt most comfortable around newborns and infants.  After a few years shooting everything, I decided to specialize in newborns and infants.  I studied and practiced my butt off, and 2 years later, here I am!

    5.  Do you get annoyed when amateurs ask for advice?

This is kind of a fuzzy area for me.  I am all for helping out my fellow photographers when they need it.  However, I do get a lot of photographers that ask me basic questions that could easily have been answered by their camera manual or a quick google search.  I don't want to be mean or deter any up and coming photographer, but what some of these people don't understand is that we all have worked so hard to be where we are.  I stayed up late reading photography articles and spent hour after hour practicing with my daughter's dolls and stuffed animals.  I learned SO much through trial and error and I feel that that is one of the best ways to learn something.  How much do you really learn if somebody is just telling you what to do and you didn't work for it yourself?

    6.  Any must have props for someone just starting out?

I honestly think that this just boils down to preference and style instead of there actually being a certain prop that you MUST have.  For me personally, I could not live without a textured neutral blanket, a knit hat (bonnets all the way for me), and a nice cream bucket.  I also LOVE my wood floor and backdrop.  Also, remember, it's the baby that makes the photo, not the prop!

    7.  Any newborn photographers that have inspired you?

Yes!  I LOVE seeing other photographer's work!  It keeps me inspired and always wanting to try something new.  Some of my favorites include Laura Farris Photography, Son Kissed Photography, and Glow Portraits.  There really are SO many that I love, but I don't think I have the time to list them all ;)

    8.  Do you offer any kind of mentoring?

I don't at this time.  I feel I'm at a level where I'm still learning and honing my skill, that I wouldn't be qualified to be a teacher.  I'm not even sure I would make a good teacher!  lol  For now, I'll leave that to the professionals  ;)

    9.  Is there anything you regret doing when you first started your photography business?

I've definitely made some mistakes in the beginning that it would be nice to have a do-over, but nothing that I truly regret.  Every choice I've made (in my business and personal life) has made what my business is today.  If I were to give someone advice that's just starting out, I would suggest having all your ducks in a row before beginning your business.  If you plan to make a profit on your photography, make sure you are set up as an official business (taxes, insurance, licensing, etc.).  You also need to price yourself for what you think you're worth, not what you can afford.  We are not always our own target market.

    10.  What should I expect at a newborn session with you?

All my clients should expect to sit down and relax while I work with your newborn!  My clients trust me with their newborn(s) so much so that I've had parents fall asleep in the chair while I'm shooting!  I want you to feel absolutely comfortable knowing that your child is in good hands, and I'm going to do my best at delivering quality newborn portraits for you and your family to ooh and ahh over for the next several decades!  ;)

    11.  When should I book my newborn session?

As soon as possible!  I photograph babies around 5-12 days old.  I only take about 4-5 newborns a month and my schedule fills up fast!  I would say a good rule of thumb is to put your deposit down around the end of your second trimester.

    12.  Do you charge extra for family or sibling photos?

Absolutely not!  In fact, I encourage you to hop into some photos with your newborn!  And what parent doesn't want a photo of big sister with little brother?  I do like to focus the majority of the session on your newborn, but I would be happy to make some time for you and your family to join in on the fun  ;)

Thanks to everyone that sent in questions!  And thanks to everyone for stopping by to read more about me and my business!  Until next time!
